I need to remind myself to research this extensively, and see how much I would need to save to safely achieve these ends.
"General Motors said it costs over $1,000 more to produce a car in the United States in Detroit than across the border in Canada, purely because of an irrational health care system here."
According to Chomsky, part of the reason government is now talking about health care subsidization is because big industry is starting to complain. PUBLIC OPINION has not changed in the past decade, but in the last election (Bush/Kerry) it was not brought up. As Kerry said, this is because there was no -political- backing for it. It would've been political suicide (even though the majority of Americans desire it, and those who don't, haven't a clue about the numerous industrialized countries that have successfully implemented it - i.e. they're undereducated, or simply just idiots - or alternatively, part of the small percentage of people who might suffer under a new system.)
I think part of it may have to do with a fear of higher taxes - but if we had a more sane foreign policy, this wouldn't be an issue. 51% of your taxes go to a business that spreads death and destruction (the military) everywhere it is ordered to go.
I also wonder if I could claim to be a refugee from here in another country. I am becoming more and more afraid of the United States and what it represents. We've had rigged elections, we've invaded two countries, soon to be three I almost guarantee, with no rational basis whatsoever. Our congress is stalemated on almost every single issue conceivable. This looks exactly like any other empire as it began to fall, and acts of military desperation, I imagine, are not far from the horizon.
