Jun. 26th, 2015 03:25 pmI think my woes are power supply related - should have a new PSU to try later today. If that fixes it, thank god - otherwise, I've two choices. One is to pretty much give up on music and audio and save me a thousand or so dollars. The other is to of course, spend that money, and build a new computer. Honestly I'm starting to care less and less about computing in general - the internet isn't all it's cracked up to be for me anymore, and I've wasted a good portion of my life staring at a screen. I do feel like the internet was a more valuable thing when I was younger - it's nice to have answers at my fingertips but search results are focused on engines making money, and real underground radicals hardly have a voice anymore. There was a time when I'd put a search into google and it'd pop up a bunch of very interesting, unique perspectives on something, written by people who'd never profit from having written them. Not the case any more.
I also had some drama with a shipper whom I've never had issues with. Ever since I started buying PC parts in the early 2000s, I've used Tiger Direct. Never had an issue, not once. But this time, I ordered something and it was out of stock the next day. I checked my bank account, no charge, and the order was stuck "In Process." I contacted them to cancel the order (because another supplier could provide it faster, or I could get something different that was in stock) but I wasted hours trying to get in touch with a human being. When I finally did, they told me, "We can't cancel the shipment because it's already in process at the warehouse." Their FAQ clearly states a shipment can be canceled as long as it has not yet shipped. I said this, and the rep said, "Okay, I can put a stop shipment notice in to the warehouse but it could take 24-48 hours to process." I was pretty much livid at this point. They lied in their FAQ, or they lied to me (the rep. obviously backpedaled.) Today I checked the status of the order, and it had been sent to UPS drop shipping. They didn't cancel my order as I had asked. As long as an order hasn't shipped with Amazon, I can cancel it in one click. These guys just wanted my cash - and that pisses me off. Given how much business I've brought them over the years, it's insane they wouldn't just cancel my order. So unfortunately for them, I'm voting with my feet. The bad part is that I could've already had the part through a different provider, but I wasn't going to double order. So three days of trying to get them to do something results in the exact opposite effect.
Not much else to report currently. I've been playing lots and lots of guitar, and trying to forget that the sun hasn't shined much the past few weeks. It needs to dry out here so Dad and I can get started on wood for the winter. Still lots of work around the house and property. Think we're still planning on doing the larger porch roof this summer as well.
Things are at a bit of a standstill at the moment. I'm not really feeling badly about that by any means, if anything, just a little frustrated with some different aspects of life. But that is the nature of life, we're not entitled to anything, and even when we try and do everything right, we aren't entitled to a good end result either. Too many factors involved to guarantee any outcome.
I still haven't decided what I want to study. That's a problem. If it wasn't so expensive, I'd just pick one of my areas of interest (psych, philo, literature, electrical, mechanical even PHYSICS) and go at that, and if I wanted to do something else after awhile, I'd change. But even online school is incredibly expensive.
