sathorThe whole reason the government and Obama want 80% of all highschool graduates to receive a college education, either 2 years or 4 years, is not because it's necessary for the economy. It's because they need the interest payments to loans to help tackle the national debt. Think I'm joking? Try this on for size.
Maintenance at major industrial facilities does not take a college education. My union alone employs half a million people in the united states. And there are many others, non-union and union maintenance individuals involved in all sorts of industries. They make very good money...far better than the average college graduate...and what you need is on-the-job training and experience, not a college education.
Maintenance will never be replaced by robots, artificial intelligence (well maybe...like a few hundred years from now plus), or machinery. It's a necessity. It doesn't take an incredible amount of intellect, but it takes some. But it definitely doesn't need you to go and get a bachelor's degree to do it.
The fact is, maintenance at numerous production facilities is the most important aspect of production. And it will become more important the more mechanized the majority of labor becomes. If you think obama is telling the truth when he says you need a college education to make a decent living in the next forty years, think again. What he means to say is "I want you to pay interest on your loans for the next ten to twenty years after graduation so we can deal with this national debt."
It's a fucking scam, sorry to break your heart. Real work is done by hard workers...not ivory tower intellectuals.
The advancement of technology is an absolutely great thing. We need computer programmers, we need cognitive scientists working together to help the future be easier on the human body. But the fact is, i can almost guarantee there will always be a need for operating engineers. We keep the world running, just like the slogan...
