Quite simply:
Don't have children.
There's plenty of empirical evidence correlating higher per capita GDP with less children per family. A loss of total population in the United States would result in a significant incline with regards to financial stability, security and standard of living.
Like that's going to happen.
Fucking idiot humans.
The worst part is that the poorest nations in the world are also the most procreation-centric, and there is absolutely nothing we can do to stop it besides educate (likely will never be enough) or sterilize/murder them. They create their very own pits of filth, although we do our share to make it worse.

Date: 2010-04-21 09:02 pm (UTC)People often forget travel by jet will become incredibly expensive and/or cease to exist completely or partially. Without the right combustion fuel it's unlikely to be possible or even worthwhile based on its efficiency - the numbers I'm looking at are with regards to ethanol...the most similar alternative renewable energy resource...and it has only 60% of the energy content of current standard jet fuel. Jets won't be able to be designed the way they are today if they are to use it eventually.
I imagine travel by nuclear-powered ship will be far more likely. Aircraft-carrier sized ferries between continents. That means our global network will be significantly reduced...almost karmic when you think about it...considering a huge portion of our fossil fuels have been abused for global for-profit enterprise distribution...that won't be as easy in the future without some kind of really special invention.
It's really becoming more obvious to me by the day...the number of children one has ultimately plays a role in the overall suffering of the human race...and for-profit enterprise is probably the greatest evil of our world. Abuse of resources for short-term profit that doesn't result in long-term benefits to humanity. Capitalism is fucking our futures.

Date: 2010-04-22 02:15 am (UTC)I'm almost certain without significant advancements in changes within my life expectancy I will probably see serious problems arising in the world...and I know that time and time again there have been individuals who felt this way, but scientifically peak oil is considered to have already been over in the vast majority of producing countries...
Just very interesting stuff...and to think we will be at nine billion+ (China's top three cities totaling an estimated 800 million) within both of our lifetimes...around 2030-2050...just a few decades away...
How will we support that many human beings without great poverty and suffering being prevalent? I can't even imagine there being enough resources to be utilized in production to provide enough jobs for all of them...

Terrible to say it, but without shipping people off world or some great technological revolution we're going to fuck ourselves over. Unless of course we do start using things like sterilization to our advantage.
