The perceived value of something is greater when we have less of what grants us that something.

The man who works long hours for less return perceives the value of his possessions as that much greater than the man who works short hours for a great deal.

I think it depends. For someone who earns a very high hourly rate I think I still have a pretty good grasp on the value of things.
