Crude Atmospheric Tower
Apr. 2nd, 2011 09:50 pmIt's probably around 80-150 ft high. I had to climb to the top of it three times today (start of the day, after first break, after lunch) get inside, and help Johnny and Chez clean it out. Lee was our supervisor/hole watcher (pretty awesome guy, btw.)
It's a confined space like you wouldn't believe. I wouldn't imagine the tower has an inside diameter larger than say 14 ft. A good portion of it is sliced in half, so you have to go down through two distinct manways that are probably 1 yard one way, 1.5 yards the other way.
Inside of this tower crude oil is condensed and pressurized to change forms. Trays line it...36 approximately...and the height between trays is probably only 20 inches. So think about crawling around with that kind of headroom, tray after tray after tray.
At least today was time and a half for ten hours. Monday through friday is only 2 hours overtime.
Almost through the first week of shutdown.
Hopefully no more than 16ish days left.
We finished seven trays today, and had to deal with 2nd shift lying through their teeth about what they accomplished. If they haven't done at least four trays by the time we go in tomorrow morning, there's going to be some bitching. First shift shouldn't have to do 90% of the work when second has just as much time to do it.
I've had all sorts of ridiculously tough jobs since I started. Yes, the Mickelson name has a lot to do with it. But on the upside, at this point, I'm basically a shoe in. I've proven myself way beyond the rest of the sixty or so red hats who were hired this round. Some of them were already laid off.
Looking good. I've been sleeping a lot more, and haven't had a lot of time to do much of anything but work, eat and shower. But it's fine. It's good for me right now. I needed a hiatus from all of this.
