Writer's Block: Close Call
May. 21st, 2009 08:23 pm[Error: unknown template qotd]Two nights ago when I was walking down sorter bays in the lumber mill I work at. These bays are suspended thirty-plus feet in the air, and can hold upwards of two tons of lumber each. One bay had failed overnight, leaving it resting on the chains below. As they started up in the morning, no one came down to check...a board was dropped into the bay that had failed, causing it to fall that thirty-plus feet, land on the chains, and come flying out.
I had just walked past it, bay 17 as it were. I heard a smash, glanced over, and saw the board land one foot away from me, twisting after having hit the wall nearby.
It may have also been flung out from up above the catwalk, in which case, it would have been a twelve foot board falling thirty-plus feet and landing only a foot from my being.
