Sep. 28th, 2003 06:12 pmI'm not going to rant much here, but i'm going to state a point.
We as students have little choice in our education before the age of 18.
Why is this?
This is because America cannot deal with the fact it's people aren't as smart as the rest of the world. "Required Courses" why do we have these in highschool? Shouldn't it all be decided by us, the people who WANT to learn CERTAIN things that PERTAIN to what we want to be when we grow up?
Before highschool, we get a nice mix of everything. I'm sure we can sort out our likes and dislikes in school before 9th grade. Now, they still require a bunch of things afterwards, and why? I'm pretty sure because America wants its people to look 'smarter'. When in reality, you forget 70% of what you learn in high school.
I don't remember the quadratic formula. And i don't remember synthetic division. I learned them both last year(even bitched about them in this journal), and put them to use, and passed the tests they were on. They are useless for me, I haven't used them again, they are FORGOTTEN.
It's time America fixed it's school system so we the students still have 'Freedom of Choice'. I'm sick of this, "You must do this, you must do that".
I want to be a philosopher, writer, teacher, artist, poet. I don't want to be a scientist, and i don't want to be a mathemetician. So let me pick the classes that are going to enrich my life with information I will remember, rather than bog it down with useless(at least to me for now) dribble that will be forgotten as soon as i pass the class.
And as they say, the more you know the less you know...so why learn about the things i won't learn everything about...
And for the record, i might've been biased, hypocritical or anything in this rant, but this rant is meant for ranting. So don't chew my ass out over opinions that i DID back up with valid information, however biased that information may be :P
